Teacher Externship

Teacher & Counselor Externships offer a unique professional development opportunity connecting the classroom to the workplace. Teachers and counselors learn how classroom content and learning strategies are applied in the workplace. With first-hand exposure, teachers and counselors can design and implement classroom activities, projects, and work-based learning opportunities, adding relevance and meaning to classroom learning.

Teachers and counselors (middle and high school) will be selected through an application process. Although there is limited funding for teachers and counselors to participate, all that are interested in the program are encouraged to apply for an externship. Priority will be given to career and technical education teachers and counselors, but based on the level of interest, further opportunities may be available with help from community partners.

All businesses interested in hosting a teacher or counselor are encouraged to submit a commitment form. This is not a tour; businesses are asked to provide teachers with hands-on experience and opportunities for observation in their business.

Vocational Rehabilitation

The Vocational Rehabilitation program, previously known as the Texas Department of Assistive Rehabilitative Services (DARS), helps people with disabilities prepare for, find or retain employment and helps youth and students prepare for post-secondary opportunities.

Texas Workforce Commission – Vocational Rehabilitation Services (TWC-VRS) recognizes the unique needs young people and their families face when preparing to leave high school.   Several services are available to assist with decision-making as to how to prepare for the world of work after high school graduation.

These services are geared to students between the ages of 14 and 22.

For more information, please contact our Student Hireability Navigator at everett.anderton@spworkforce.org to get you connect with TWC-VRS.
